Chateau de Combis is a unique jewel in the south of France.
There isn’t another in its style.
Founded 400 years ago by the Lord de Combis with funds gifted for his service in war by King Louis XIII.
With its 400 years of history, the one metre thick castle walls keep the cool and keep the heat, and light and windows are everywhere. Two towers and two pigeonniers (an arrow slit or two) are apparent. Charming gardens are in all directions, fields and woods are there to explore.
Surrounded by stunning views from the rolling hills of the Gers to the Pyrenees, delightful walks can be enjoyed in its grounds from the Parc, to the potager, to the vineyard, to the orchard, to the duck-pond, to the beehives, and from the prairies to the woods, where wild boar, deer and hare roam free.
The chateau has been beautifully decorated with classical French and English furniture dating from 700 years to the modern. Homage is paid to heritage, and elements from across the world, old and new, ensure that each guest is made to feel at home.
Refurbished to the highest standards, every room has an ensuite bathroom.
Our honey, our jam, our herbs and our fruit are produced at the chateau, or by friends nearby. Samatan, our nearest town, is the duck and foie gras capital of the world, and home to one of France’s most famous markets. The ducks of Combis, complete with their own Duckingham Palace, are for ornament, in general.
With absolute confidence we offer Combis. We offer our love and respect to its founding families. We preserve their coats of arms, and cherish every generation and family that has visited since. The decor therefore ranges from the ancient blazons within the grand salon to the Dennis the Menace in the music room. David Bowie gets more than a look-in. As do our guests.

Rooms & Suites
This chamber was originally that of the master, the Lord of Combis. We have renamed it because the whole house and its spirit already bears Combis’ name, but this chap also deserves a place.
The Viscount, General Beresford stayed in this room during one of Europe’s greatest wars while pursuing the French army from the Peninsular campaign, having pursued the Emperor Napoleon’s forces across the Pyrenees. By commanding his men to lay their shot on the musketeer statue in the park, before the villagers, the night before the ‘battle’ of Lombez, and being sure some local men saw, no loss of life was recorded the following day. Smart work. The effect of their shot remains to be seen from where he commanded the fusillade, within this suite. It is regal, with a vast bed. A double bath and separate shower are attached, in the north east tower, and views over the park are magnificent.
The more famous Duke, General Wellington carried out similar in Samatan, our very near neighbour. Both towns were taken on the Route de Toulouse on 14th April 1814, without loss of life on either side. Beresford and Wellington were both Irishmen, as am I. Though we might the three of us be a wee bit English too.-

This, by reputation, is where D’Artagnan himself stayed for some time. I couldn’t blame him as it is my favourite room. He was in his later years when he left us at the age of 50, to continue campaigning with his master, King Louis, unto his advance to Maastricht and unto his end. If the day is clear, you can see the Pyrenees from your bed. Behind you, Cole and Sons wallpaper and before you mountains. One of the more spacious and superb facilities in the house. Fab when an extra bed or two is needed. A splendid shower room as always.

The most castley bit of all. Low stone entries and the north west tower. A spiral staircase to a secret bedroom. Often preferred by our younger guests, but on other occasions, bizarrely by rather tall Kings Guards officers. Not joking. Five and counting. A bet? I am still puzzled by this. Or maybe I’m not. If Rapunzel had stayed (and she definitely did) it was from here she would have let down her hair. The Guards perhaps want to come and rescue her? Anyway, loved by young girls. I have crammed six into that room and all the mums and dads were delighted.

Lavender has windows facing both the courtyard and the rear park. The backboard behind the bed, with its ludicrous wallpaper makes me think I am staying in a groovy Soho hotel. And then I wake up in a chateau in France. Like the other rooms it has an excellent, large shower. Lavender I have chosen to live in myself for a couple of years in off-season. So it must have its own allure and charm, n’est-ce pas?

The oak is the cool room for cool folks. Least said.... It has the biggest shower that resembles a wine cellar, with carpentry on high. And a 400 year evergreen oak outside. The bedroom is just cooler than everywhere else. But everyone will want to come and have a look at your shower.

Our only twin, Sunflower, shines the yellow of the fields of flowers that surround us in summer. It can be arranged as a double, looks over the park, and boasts the only hotel style bathroom that can if you wish be shared with rest of the house - or not! Choice by virtue of keys and a door to the hall and bedroom. Often, but not always a preferred choice for young’uns. Two Guards officers, two occasions. Ok. Same ones.

Apart from the rest of the house, this room has beams only six feet up, is secluded, perfect for the ones who just got engaged, for example. It has the most sumptuous bathroom of all, exceeding Beresford by scale, with all the same facilities, including a double bath and separate shower. For the ones that want to get away. Alternatively, there is a mezzanine just below where two extra oiks can be installed in times of overflow. But it will cost ya.
Views of the Pyrenees from bed when clear. Orchard and park at worst. The armchair at the very least.-
